Marriage was not an institution that Ishiah took lightly. Robin had often, over the years, made jokes about the fact that there were birds that mated for life— Ishiah had never found such jokes quite so funny. The act of binding oneself to another person was no small choice, nothing to be taken lightly, especially in a day and age when marriage was no longer considered a necessity for consummation, or as a prerequisite to sexual intercourse. He knew, of course, that not all people felt an obligation to be completely sure of themselves before taking that step. That people married for money, for face, or just on the high of emotion, happiness erasing all fears. He knew, and he'd come to accept it over the years, never judging people for their follies and sticking by his policy of accepting everyone under his roof, anyone who didn't incur deliberate and knowing harm upon others.
But when it came to his friends and family, Ishiah's standards had always been a bit skewed in the direction of expecting more. Protecting more. So when Lucy had come to him with her good news, however glad Ishiah was for the fact that she could love someone enough in that moment to say yes, he still had his reservations. And certainly, the first priority of his before the ceremony was finding Pete Campbell and getting to know the man better.
Whether or not there was a proper way to go about the matter, Ishiah wasn't sure, and as was becoming typical for him whenever the peri needed advice, he found himself on Trixa's doorstep, knuckles rapping against the door.

However, today was different, today she was decanting and straining the bottles of infused vodka she'd set aside to steep a week ago. She was slowly working up an inventory, not that she knew what she'd do with it aside from donate it to the bars and clubs on the island, but that was a problem for later. And hearing the knock on the door, she was happy enough to set it aside for later, relieved to have a distraction, however momentary come right up to her doorstep.
"Hey, neighbor." As usual, she was glad to see Ishiah, even if the expression on his face seemed a little too serious for just a casual visit. "Finally come to tour the remolded digs?"
no subject
He defaulted to the former, having experienced full well the difficulties of chestnut curls only being a mind's brush away, but these days, he felt the distance just as heavily as the memories.
"...no," he replied, with a blink of surprise, and an attempt at a smile that didn't quite reach his lips. He peered around appraisingly, as though he'd forgotten to make the stop over in the first place (he had) to look at how she'd resettled. "It looks nice."
Pressing his hand to his lips directly after, his gaze fell down to Trixa as he paused. "Have any of your close friends ever gotten married?"
no subject
"Close friends, not really. But I've been to weddings galore, they're great ways to get the dirt on people." She gave him an amused wink and sly grin. "Drunk relatives are a boon in my business, weddings put them all in one place."
She paused, picking up one of her steeping alcohols, an herbal mix. "I take it one of your friends here is getting hitched?"
no subject
His lips pressed thin. He never could have had a sister in blood, in flesh, and sometimes he wondered if his actions weren't fully informed because of it.
"She was tricked, the last time she was romantically involved with someone. And marriage wasn't even a factor back then," he said quietly.
no subject
But his follow-up concern, well, that was more in her wheelhouse. "Tricked? How? And are you worried that it's happening again?" She paused in her movements to watch him, suddenly interested far more than she should have been.
no subject
There were too many questions being posed all at once, and for a moment, Ishiah found himself at a loss as to where to begin, which detail was most important, which he most needed for Trixa to understand for her to be able to offer any advice at all. Eventually, he pressed his lips together, the expression on his face a touch impatient for how long it took him to prioritize (things were still so much simpler, faster, more efficient when he'd been able to follow a rulebook down to the letter).
"I have no explicit reason to be worried that the previous situation is repeating itself," Ishiah clarified first, not wanting to place undue blame or burden on Pete Campbell. "In fact, I have not even met the man that she is going to marry, not properly, only because I didn't feel that I had the right to interfere with her life, especially when it comes to romance, which I have very little experience with on the whole. As for the previous significant other of hers, he lied about his identity. Entirely, down to his name. There are potentially practical reasons for it, of course, but I certainly wish that the situation won't repeat itself again. She was, very understandably, quite upset when she found out, and she only found out after the man disappeared from the island altogether."

She thought about it for a moment, trying to figure out exactly what it was Ishiah needed advice on. He wasn't really the sort for subterfuge, and he didn't seem to suspect the kid, man, whoever, so why come to Trixa? What did he want?
"I'm normally pretty quick on the uptake, but I'm not seeing a problem here. What do you need my help for, unless you want me to investigate the kid?"
Which... she wasn't exactly opposed to. It would be something to do, something more than think about the past.

Jaw locking and scar pulling white, he shook his head once more, hair falling out of place where it had been perfectly combed before.
"I want to approach him directly, but I have always heard a great deal of complaints floating around about people being too overprotective of one another. The last thing I want to do is to make life difficult for Lucy."
no subject
"Here's a couple of tips. First, tell Lucy you want to meet him, don't do it behind her back. Second, if she can be there when you meet him, all the better, that way she can keep you from going all alpha male on him and vice versa. That the sort of advice you looking for?"
no subject
He simply didn't like owing people.
"But he would surely only show the better side of himself to me in front of Lucy, wouldn't he?" Ishiah asked, blinking. "Wouldn't I want to see him in his natural setting, before he's practiced and learned to put on whatever appearance he thinks would most impress me?"
no subject
Good lord, she was going to have to teach him how to be an in-law, wasn't she? Step by ever-loving step. Christ. Maybe literally. Couldn't the Almighty give his retirees some coping skills? Free-will issues be damned.
Also, she wasn't having this conversation in her work-room. "C'mon, feather-brain, let's go grab a drink and sit on the porch like civilized beach bums."
no subject
Apparently, making sure that he could keep up with Trixa was more immediate than the thoughts she had to give.
"Civilized beach bum seems to be an oxymoron," he stated lamely, still trying to work out the other details in his head, even as he waited for her to direct him towards whatever she wanted Ishiah to hep bring.

As she pulled the jug of herbal tea from her little kitchenette she continued to speak. "What the worse that can happen if you and this kid don't get along? Fist fight? Bruises heal, words can be apologized for. So long as you don't take a flaming sword to his gut, I think you'll be okay?"
no subject
Following Trixa's progress and reaching in her cupboards for a pair of glasses, instinctively polishing them for good measure, Ishiah inhaled. "I'm a member of the ITF, and as such, have a precedent to uphold. I doubt it'd be much appreciated if I decided to suddenly involve myself in an altercation with a perfectly respectable young man."
no subject
With the jug of tea in her hand, she headed outside to sit on her door stoop. It was humid, when wasn't it? But it wasn't too bad and the tea would help. Besides, there was more of a breeze outside than there was in, and she was reminded a little of the old South, everyone's grandmothers on the front porch with their iced teas or mint juleps. There was a gentility in the image, a tangible nostalgia that made her smile a little.
"And if you really thought he was perfectly respectable, would we be having this conversation?"
no subject
He placed both of the glasses down on the table, and sat in the chair further from the entrance.
"Desperate to make the most of whatever amount of time they have here. It informs their decisions differently."
no subject
It was almost amusing, Ishiah's disquiet about the whole thing and she wasn't sure if it was his recently acquired over-protectiveness or his bafflement on how to deal with it. Either way, she was shuffling it into a nice place in her memory. In case Robin ever came back. Or if Leo showed. Either of them would no doubt find it as amusing as she did.
"Are you this worried about Caliban and Niko back in New York, or is this an island thing that's developed?"
no subject
His eyes opened, and they were calm, however briefly that would last.
"Take another look at Caliban and Niko, and tell me that either of them wouldn't be able to handle themselves," he instructed quietly. "I'll tell you this much— Niko was able to cut himself off from a woman he loved simply because her relatively estranged daughter posed a threat to the brothers. Caliban has had various women approach him on this island, and has yet to make a move beyond a kiss or two. If anything, those two are as relatively hesitant as either of us would be."

She chuckled, not really surprised he'd missed the point. Peris tended to be very linear in their thinking. Start to goal, with no meandering to consider the nuances. He'd been looking for advice on romantic matters, so that was what he'd assumed. Perfectly understandable, after all.
"And, for the record, being protective has nothing to do with their ability to protect themselves. You're protective of people, romantically, physically, emotionally, because you care about them. And I'm guessing you must care for Lucy quite a bit, don't you?"
no subject
"Relatively so, perhaps," he agreed at last. "Until I'd witnessed the death of my brother, I'm not sure that my efforts went far beyond what practically had to be." His gray-blue eyes flickered up to Trixa's own, conflicted.
"I want Lucy to be happy. And the same goes for all of my friends here. Yourself as well, surprising though that initially was to me."
no subject
"We love you, too, Feathers. And it's all natural. Duty, doing what's believed to be morally right eventually becomes doing what's emotionally right. It hurts more, it's confusing as hell because you can't reason with emotion, and if something goes wrong the damage can be irreversible." Pulling back, she gave him a smile. "She wants you to be happy, too. She wants to share her happiness with you, even if you don't understand it. So maybe stop thinking about it so much and just... enjoy the feeling. Our kind, the long-lived, we don't get to do these things very often. Have families, friends, lovers..." The Gods only knew she'd resisted the impulse for too long back home. "When you have them, cherish them."
She slid back to her spot on the step, looking out to the distance, comparing it to a million other places she'd been in memories stretched out into thousands of years. "If you find a piece of it here, I get that you want to know that you need to examine it, but maybe... maybe you just gotta let this one go, Ishiah. Be there for her, don't worry about him and if it all goes pear-shaped, I'll help you send him to the clinic - no questions asked."
no subject
Just in case he had reason to be wary.
"Okay," he said first with a furrowed brow and a slight nod. There seemed to be a finality in her words, a path given for every possible fork in the road, no need for further details or explanation. And so, when he took in a breath to speak again, the question dove in another direction entirely.
"Is that going to become a regular occurrence?" he asked, finger briefly pointing to his cheek.
no subject
So with a lecherous grin and a teasing twitch of her eyebrows she leaned forward and asked, "Would you like it to be?"
Robin would be proud. Or jealous. Either way it was a win in her book.
no subject
His eyes widened a touch at her expression.
"Now I'm beginning to doubt whether or not I want it at all."
no subject
Besides, she could always change her mind.
"Last time, promise. Unless you really, really need it. Or deserve it. Haven't decided which it should be."
no subject
"I don't understand what... there is about this that I need," he slowly remarked, mulling over his words. "Which is not to say that it's unpleasant, but it seems every action is taken with a purpose in mind."
no subject
She tone softened, and for a moment, she let herself get serious. As much fun as it was to poke him, this wasn't the time. She didn't want to alienate him, she didn't want him to start avoiding her. Not with him being her last solid connection to home, the surly Auephling notwithstanding. She took his hand and held it, giving it a slight squeeze.
"I don't want anything but my friend. Here... we try to live in the moment, we try to keep from dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Ruffling your feathers, it amuses me, it confuses you which amuses me more and I should do it, but..." She spread her hands out in a 'there you have it' gesture. "Trust me, lover-boy, I decide to try and seduce you, you'll know it."
no subject
"Well, it's... harmless amusement, for the most part," Ishiah considered, brows furrowing as he wondered if he was giving her too much of a free hand with that statement. "And so long as that's the case, it's more of a joke, isn't it? Only with the difficulty of my sense of humor not having quite aligned with the majority of other people's yet."
He tried for a light smile. "Don't take this literally, though, but I think the proper response is to this hypothetical seduction is 'I would like to see you try.'"
no subject
Well, lecherous for him, Robin would have had a completely different comment.
"Yes, yes, you would. I may not be a puck, but I'm pretty damn good when I want to be."
no subject
"I'll take your word for it."
He only paused briefly before looking up again, expression more serious, voice quieted. "Thank you, Trixa. My apologies for asking so many favors of you."
no subject
Wow, her Mama must be laughing her ass off somewhere with Trixa being so philosophical and all.
"I'm not going anywhere and the door's always open, understand?"
no subject
"And mine to you as well, though I believe thus far, it's still I who am in your debt," he replied, lips barely quirked.
no subject
It wasn't ego if it was true. How could she possibly be what she was, do what she did, if she didn't have that innate ability to find out and understand what made people, gods, and any other being do the things it did. You can't con what you don't understand. You can't trick if you don't know that the other party really wants in life.
"But sooner or later, I'm sure I'll take you up on that."
no subject
Besides, Ishiah didn't wax poetic about just anyone, and hadn't even done so often with Robin himself.
"But I'll be waiting."
